My Journey in Design

Early Beginnings

My passion for design revealed itself early in my childhood. At just 12 years old, I won a Halloween contest for the “most creative” costume, which I crafted entirely from wire hangers and newspaper. I was an octopus! This recognition was an early sign of my creative spirit and love for inventing unique designs.

Entrepreneurship

Soon after, I developed advanced sewing skills and became an expert seamstress. In 1984, I launched my first business, Creative Claire, working from my home. Over the next two years, I specialized in designing bridal dresses and special occasion attire, as well as offering alteration services to clients.

New Horizons

In 1988, I relocated to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The vibrant island environment inspired me to pursue a new artistic direction. I developed an innovative method for dyeing batiks, drawing inspiration from the local flora and fauna. This method of producing colored designs on dyed textiles reflected the distinctive ambiance of the Caribbean, incorporating elements of the island’s natural beauty into each piece.

My exploration of batik techniques not only enriched my artistic repertoire but also connected me more deeply to the culture and environment of St. Croix. I now use these colors and patterns to hand paint custom t-shirts making each creation a celebration of the island’s spirit.

Each piece I create features hand-painted themes inspired by the island’s native environment including patterns in luminous blues and greens capturing the essence of turquoise waters and lush landscapes. Geometric borders full of corals and sunshine yellows highlight island life in every shirt.

The joy of turning a client’s vision into wearable art is endlessly rewarding, and every project invites new possibilities for creative expression. Each piece is tailored to reflect your personality with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a one-of-a-kind garment. Let me create a garment for you!
